                                BEHAVIOUR ISSUES

With the aim to help children manage their emotions effectively, a workshop on ‘Behaviour Issues’ was conducted by NIE for class V on Monday, 6 May 2024. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Vandana Tandon, who has taken over 6000 workshops in the fields of Career Guidance, Debating, Self Esteem Management  etc.

The workshop was set in motion with an interactive session on the strategies to handle behaviours in students. In her talk Ms Vandana Tandon said that to be an ‘effective communicator’, one should be confident, respectful, and not be angry or rude or arrogant. By following these tips, one can communicate effectively and build positive relationships with others. This was supported by a hands-on activities like five students were made to volunteer and asked to walk on the stage, while others were asked to judge their behaviour and confidence levels based on the non-verbal cues like the way they walked and how confident they appeared while doing so.
Next, she threw light on abusive language being used by children. She said that it should not be accepted by anyone. It should be handled in a way like: when someone tries to give a present to you and you do not accept it or by taking a sip of water and pushing it back with the abuse and gulping it down. Stand up for yourself and refuse to engage with the abusive language. It's a way of showing that you won't allow yourself to be treated poorly.
Bullying, yet another behaviour issue (physical, verbal, social)can be handled calmly. If someone is bullying you, they might tease you, spread rumours, exclude you from activities, or even physically harm you. It's natural to feel upset or scared when being bullied, but try to stay calm and confident. Bullies often target those who appear vulnerable or upset, so showing confidence can deter further bullying. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or school counsellor, about what's happening. They can provide support and help you come up with a plan to address the bullying.
The session also dealt with the need to handle peer pressure effectively and realistic scenarios were taken up to discuss the influence of peer pressure on children these days and how to overcome it. It was emphasised that navigating relationships within the context of peer pressure can be challenging, as individuals may feel torn between maintaining social connections and staying true to themselves. The resource person clearly stated the need to maintain boundaries and how to communicate these boundaries effectively and assertively, even in the face of peer pressure to conform. An activity including a student volunteer was conducted to see how one can misjudge non-verbal cues and hence how important it is to clear out scenarios with the concerned person to avoid such misconceptions which can further lead to alterations to behaviours of individuals.
The workshop concluded with a question answer round wherein all the doubts of the children were attended and meticulously answered.
